A new selective pallet racking system was designed to support warehouse growth and improve pallet storage efficiency inside a Florida distribution facility. Project Scope and Warehouse Requirements

This project included the layout and planning of five runs of selective pallet racking, each measuring approximately 125 linear feet. The storage system was configured with both single-sided and double-sided rack rows in order to balance storage density with forklift accessibility.

A 13-foot aisle width was incorporated throughout the layout to accommodate forklift travel and pallet handling operations. Additionally, the warehouse clear height of 32 feet allowed the system to support multiple beam elevations while maintaining safe clearance for loading and retrieval.

The requested rack specifications included:

  • 42-inch deep x 240-inch tall uprights
  • 144-inch beam pairs rated near 5,000 pounds per level
  • Full wire decking on beam levels
  • Row spacers for back-to-back rack rows
  • Wedge anchors and safety hardware
  • Pallet loads averaging 1,500 pounds per position

Selective Pallet Racking Configuration

The storage layout was designed around a four-position-high configuration consisting of one floor level plus three beam levels. This approach allowed the warehouse to maximize vertical cube utilization while still maintaining direct access to every pallet position.

Unlike higher-density storage systems, selective pallet rack provides immediate access to individual SKUs without requiring pallets to be moved first. Because of this, the system works especially well for warehouses handling mixed inventory, rotating stock, or active order fulfillment.

Wire decking was added across all beam levels in order to improve pallet support and create a safer storage environment. In addition, flue spacing requirements were incorporated into the design to support proper fire code compliance and sprinkler performance.

Proposed Layout and Capacity Planning

Two separate layout concepts were evaluated during the project planning phase. The proposed solution delivered more than 43,000 cubic feet of storage capacity while maintaining proper forklift travel lanes and pallet accessibility.

An alternate configuration was also developed to increase square footage capacity and improve rack positioning flexibility. The alternate layout increased overall storage volume while also incorporating rack protection components in key traffic areas.
